Investing in long-term water resilience and sustainable growth

Anglian Water is delivering one of the UK’s largest environmental and infrastructure investment programmes, strengthening long-term water resilience, supporting regional growth and improving environmental outcomes across the East of England.

Building for better represents a long-term commitment to resilient infrastructure, innovation and environmental stewardship in response to the increasing challenges of climate change, population growth and water scarcity.

Between 2025 and 2030, we plan to invest more than £11 billion across the region, our largest programme to date, building on £3.8 billion already invested to modernise and strengthen critical water and wastewater infrastructure.

Responding to structural water challenges

The East of England is one of the fastest-growing and most water-stressed regions in the UK. Climate pressures, rising demand and increasing environmental expectations are driving the need for significant long-term investment.

Building for better responds to these challenges by improving water resilience, protecting the environmentand supporting sustainable economic growth across the region.

The programme combines strategic infrastructure investment with innovation, operational efficiency and nature-based solutions to help ensure reliable essential services for future generations.

Building for better brings together major programmes of investment across water resilience, environmental performance and climate adaptation.

Strengthening water resilience

We are investing in new strategic infrastructure to secure long-term water supplies, including:

  • Two new reservoirs
  • Expanded water transfer infrastructure
  • Leakage reduction programmes
  • Future water supply solutions

The programme also includes £149 million of early-stage investment in proposed desalination schemes in Lincolnshire and Norfolk, supporting long-term resilience planning in one of the UK’s driest regions.

Improving environmental performance

We are delivering major environmental improvements across rivers, coastlines and wastewater infrastructure, including:

  • £400 million+ of coastal water improvement projects
  • Investment to reduce storm overflow spills
  • Programmes to improve river health

We are also expanding environmental monitoring and catchment-based approaches to support biodiversity, water quality and long-term ecosystem resilience.

Supporting climate adaptation

Our investment programme strengthens resilience to drought, flooding and extreme weather.

Alongside traditional infrastructure, we are investing in innovative and nature-based solutions that support long-term adaptation while reducing operational and environmental risk.
